Defending titleholders in box seat.

Defending Champions Western Australia Men staged an incredible come back against Queensland in their round four match and are holding on to the number one position at the completion of day two of the Australian Men's Darts Teams Championships at the Royal Hobart Showgrounds in Hobart at the 28th Puma Australian Darts Championships. Their experience at this level again came through today to remain undefeated after five rounds of competition. Queensland appears to be the only other team with a chance at the title with two rounds to play tomorrow. They will be relying on either New South Wales or the Northern Territory to put a stop to the Western Australian Team.
The Western Australian Ladies Teams title defense could be over for 2007. Queensland comfortably defeated the titleholders and are sitting comfortably in top place. The Queenslanders out played the very experienced Western Australian Team dominating the whole match. Western Australia just could not get into this game.
Men
The pressure was on Western Australia and Queensland from the start today. Neither team could afford a slip up at this stage of competition. A loss here could mean the end of their title hopes, so the winner of the clash between these two teams produced some brilliant darts. Queensland started out brilliantly winning both triples and two of the pairs to take a 4 - 1 lead going into the singles legs. Tony David defeated Ian Brown (2 - 1) in a brilliant display of darts by both players and Kyle Anderson won the second singles to bring the score back for the Western Australian's to 3 - 4. Geoff Kime gave the Queenslanders a little breathing space with a win in his single, Beau Anderson for Western Australia pulled the score back again. The Queenslanders were up 5 - 4 with the last two singles to play. Brad Austen produced some brilliant darts (two 18-darters) to tie up the match. The final leg was well underway and would go to the third leg to decide the winner. Lindsay Haji Ali a "rookie" at these championships was able to finish from 82 to give the Western Australian's the round victory and every chance to defend the title. This was a great contest played by twelve very evenly matched players which thrilled the big crowd watching.
Other matches in this round saw Tasmania claim its second win with an 8 - 3 win over New South Wales. South Australia were starting to find some form after suffering a couple of heavy loses in the first two rounds yesterday by defeating the ACT 7 - 4 and Victoria finally won a match to end any hopes the Northern Territory had a winning the 2007 Championships.
Round five saw Victoria have a big win 8 - 3 over South Australia. SA could not find the doubles which proved very costly in a number of games. Western Australia also came back strongly after the loss this morning to smash Tasmania 10 - 1. The battle between the two Territories saw the Northern Territory come out on top winning 6 - 5. Queensland continued its victorious ways with a 9 - 2 a match against New South Wales to remain the only undefeated match.
With two round of competition left only two teams can win the title - either Queensland or Western Australia. Both have to keep winning. If Western Australia slips up Queensland will be there to pounce.
Ladies
In the ladies competition the Queensland Ladies Team again started the day strongly with a big victory over the Western Australian's 8 - 3. The title defenders were out classed suffering their first defeat in match that produced plenty of pressure on the players but was handled a little better by the Queenslanders. After the two triples the match was tied, but from this point on the Queenslanders applied the pressure. They won all three pairs legs to take the lead out to 4 - 1. Nancy Myers, Cathy Shaw and Pam Burr won the first three singles to give them victory. Natalie Carter pulled back one leg in the fourth. Lauren Peters and Kathy McGregor won the last two singles to give them the match and a great chance at taking out the title.
Tasmania was back in the winners circle with another strong win over New South Wales. Victoria produced its second victory, this time over the Northern Territory. South Australia had a comfortable win over the ACT 10 - 1 to record their second victory.
The Northern Territory ladies finally struck a win in this round with a score of 6 - 5 in a very close contest. Western Australia and Tasmania faced off against each other in this round. Western Australia had suffered a loss in the previous round and Tasmania a loss last round yesterday. It was not a close tussle between these two teams with Western Australia coming out easy victors winning 10 - 1. Queensland won its fifth match by taking care of NSW to the tune of 9 - 2 while Victoria continued to find some form at last with another win over South Australia winning 6 - 5.
Realistically Queensland should win the title for the fourth time. They last won the title right back in 1987. Western Australia has only lost one game and ready to accept the title if Queensland slips up.
Competition continues tomorrow at the Royal Hobart Showgrounds starting at 10.00am with the last two round of the Teams Competition.
