After two days of non-stop darts the Western Australian Gold Team won the Ladies Peter McMenamin Cup at the Royal Hobart Showgrounds in Hobart today. This is the seventh time that the Western Australian Ladies have won this title.

Western Australian Ladies Darts Teams have dominated the Peter McMenamin Cup over the 10 years this event has been played when the event was first played back in Adelaide in 1998. 2007 saw them dominate again. The WA Gold and WA Black Teams won through to the final both being undefeated in the lead round robin WA Ladiesmatches. Admittedly they have some very talented players in both teams with five players that have represented Australia in the two teams, making it a hard task for the other states to get on top of these teams. WA Gold's biggest challenge came from Victoria who managed to take six legs of them, while Tasmania were the closest team to upsetting the WA Black Team losing it 9 - 8 in a tie-breaker.

After the round robin South Australia placed second in the Green Division with just the won lose to WA. Queensland placed third losing to both WA and SA. In the Gold Division it was the same scenario. Victoria placed second with the one lose to WA and Queensland finished third with loses to WA and Victoria.

After two days of non-stop darts the two WA Teams were to fight out the final. The Western Australian Gold Team represented by Dot McLeod, Louise Ball Shirley Corker and Jodie Hislop (pictured above) had a sensational victory winning 9 - 5. WA Gold accounted for the WA Black Team represented by Samara Ash, Natalie Carter, Kim Kelly and Stephanie Moriarty in the final.

WA LadiesThe WA Gold ladies jumped out to a 7 - 2 lead early in the final. Dot McLeod and Jodie Hislop won the opening couple of legs. Western Australian Black Team player Kim Kelly won the third leg. WA Gold won the next four legs before Stephanie Moriarty stopped the rot for the WA Black Team. Louise Ball immediately struck back for the Gold Team to make the score 7 - 2. Samara Ash, Natalie Carter and Stephanie Moriarty were getting there team back into the final reeling of the next three legs to bring the score to 7 - 5 to the Gold Team. As good teams always seem to do, the WA Gold Team responded and Dot McLeod won the thirteenth leg to be only one leg away from the title. Jodie Hislop was able to win the next leg to give the WA Gold Team the title.

Players to perform outstandingly over the two days were Louise Ball and Dot McLeod (WA) Sandra Smith (Tas), Margaret Smallwood (Qld), Corrine Hammond (NSW) Janine Cassar (Vic) and Kathy McGregor (QLD)

The Men's competition saw the winner came from the Gold Division where the Western Australian Gold Team were dominating that side of the competition. They won through to the final without losing a single match in the round robin leading up to the finals. Victoria Navy placed second with only the one loss to Western Australia. In the Green Division the Western Australian Team won through to the final, again undefeated. Placing in second place went to Queensland White losing just the one round to Western Australia.

WA MenThe final between the Green and Gold Divisions was a reel close contest early. With both teams in great playing form the big crowd were waiting in eager anticipation. The Western Australian Gold Team consisted of players Kyle Anderson Tony David, Brad Austen, and Kim Lewis (pictured left) whom played brilliant darts. They started brilliantly with Brad Austen winning the first legs in 18 darts. Beau Anderson won the next leg for the Western Australian Black Team in 19 darts. Kim Lewis won the third leg in 21 for the Gold Team only to see Damon Heta win the fourth leg to square up the final at 2 - 2. The final was surging from one side to the other. The next six legs saw both teams going leg for leg. Tony David won the tenth leg to bring the match score to 5 - 5 and it looked as if this final was going to go the full distance. However, Kyle Anderson won two legs Brad Austen one and Kim Lewis one leg saw the Gold Team win the required four legs to give them the title. Those four legs were won in 20, 16, 20 and 18 darts with the Western Australian Black Team players in Kerry Whear, Lindsay Haji Ali Beau Anderson, and Damon Heta (pictured below) all sitting on the double at the end of these four legs.

WA MenThe WA Gold Team had won the title for the third times backing up on last years win in Adelaide and winning previously in 2000. There was some magnificent pegouts in this final, which was the highlight. Those pegout being a 151 by Brad Austen, a 122 and a 116 by Damon Heta and a number of finishes in the 90's.

Players to shine throughout the two days were Jason Murdoch (QLD), Tony David (WA), Peter Machin (SA), Dave Methven (TAS) and Michael Mullaney (ACT).

The Australian Ladies and Men's Pairs start tomorrow morning at 10am.
