Ladies Peter Mac Darts Cup shoots to the West for the 4th time

After two days of non-stop darts the Western Australian Gold Team won the Ladies Peter Mc Menamin Cup in Canberra today. This is the fourth time that the Western Australian Ladies have won this title. They accounted for the New South Wales Dark Blue Team in the final. The Western Australian Team represented by Natalie Carter, Dot McLeod, Louise Ball and Gillian Hackett had a comfortably victory winning 9 – 6. The WA ladies jumped out to a 5 – 1 lead early in the final before NSW were able to go leg for leg with WA in the next six legs. With WA requiring one more leg for the title NSW tried to rally by winning the next two legs to put the score at 8 – 6. The fifteenth leg saw Gillian Hackett throw a 19-darter against Kerry Jacobs to seal the title for WA.

The trip to the final could have been a lot easier for NSW Dark Blue but an unexpected loss to South Australia in the last preliminary round robin put the pressure back on them. This meant NSW Dark Blue represented by Kerry Jacobs, Corrine Hammond, Brooke Travis and Carol Forwood now had to play a tiebreaker against Queensland Maroon Team to find a winner as Queensland had only lost the one match also and that was to NSW Dark Blue. Kerry Jacobs and Pam Burr were selected to represent their teams in that tiebreaker which saw Jacobs much to the relief of her fellow teammates win 2-0. The WA Team won their division with out losing a round while Queensland White suffering just the one loss to WA.

In the Men’s competition saw the winner came from the Green Division where the NSW Dark Blue team were dominating that side of the competition. They won through to the final without losing a single match in the round robin leading up to the finals. Queensland Maroon placed second with only the one loss to NSW. In the Gold Division the WA Gold Team had exactly the same scenario, win all of their qualifying rounds. Victoria placed second with two loses during the round robins.

The final between the Green and Gold Divisions was a reel cliffhanger. With both teams undefeated during the event the big crowd were waiting in eager anticipation. The NSW Team consisted of players Brian Roach, Simon Whitlock, Phil Heath, and Barry Jouanett played brilliant darts after looking in serious trouble nearing the end of the final. NSW were 5 –3 up before the WA started a strong response. The WA Gold Team made up Tony David, Graham Hunt, Brad Austen and Kim Lewis winning five of the next six legs to jump out to an 8 – 6 lead and requiring just one more leg for the title. NSW were not going to lie down though, and won the next two legs to push the final into a sudden death tiebreaker. The Captain’s selected Tony David and Simon Whitlock. In their earlier match David threw a 13-darter against Whitlock to claim a point for his team. The two days of non-stop darts had come down to this one leg of darts to find our Champions. Down at the final double to win the leg, both players had their chances at hitting the winning double. Whitlock with his second chance hit double twenty for the victory. This was the first time NSW has won this event since being introduced in to the Championships in 1998.

One of the highlights of the day came in the last round of competition. The ACT Ladies Teams have struggled against all other States in this event, but today Kath Clemson threw the perfect three darts to finish a leg of darts against Queensland’s Anita Tapau. A magic 170 pegout the highest possible finish to a game of darts.

The Peter Mc Menamin Cup was the first competition completed on the eight-day program at the 25th Australian Darts Championships where 128 of Australians top ladies and men are competing. The Peter Mac Cup named after the now deceased Darts Federation of Australia and World Darts Federation President Peter Mc Menamin who lived in Canberra, is a round robin competition with all States and Territories having a team in each of the Green and Gold Divisions.
