Third Singles Darts Title for Carter

Natalie Carter (pictured right) claimed her third Australian Ladies Darts Singles Champion today in Darwin. She first won the title in Launceston in 1999 and then in Gosford in 2002. She accounted for Helen Johnston from Burnie Tasmania today 5-4 in magnificent tight final. Today’s was a re peat of the last year as these two players both contested the 2002 final. On that occasion Carter won 5-3. Carter started the final strongly winning the first two legs, before Johnston fought back to tie the final at 2-2. From that point on both players were winning alternate legs until the score was 4-4. The final leg saw Carter start and the ladies matching each other for scores. Both players had a chance to win the leg with several darts at the double. WA’s Carter pegged double twenty and her third title was secure.
Disappoint for Johnston having made the final in the last two years and unable to win her first title.

Natalie Carter 21.482
Helen Johnston 20.162

Australia has new Men’s Singles Darts Champion

Kim Lewis (left) from WA became only the 26th player to win the Australian Men’s Darts Singles title since the event started in 1964. Many of the big guns fell in the early rounds, which showed how close and tough the men’s competition is at the 24th Australian Darts Championships. This was Lewis’s first shot at an Australian Singles title and he had to fight hard the whole way.

Lewis defeated his teammate from yesterday Darryl Curley in fluctuating final. Lewis started very strongly winning five of the first six legs. Requiring one for leg for the title, Curley fought back hard winning the next four legs with brilliant darts to tie the final at 5-5. Lewis was in trouble as Curley was on a roll and had the lead off darts in the final leg. Both players scored heavily coming down. Curley wired a 111 peg, just missing double top. This left Lewis three darts at double four. Only one dart was required and the title was his.

A brilliant exhibition of darts in the semi final saw Lewis defeat Queensland’s Dave Marshall 5 legs to 1. Marshall was a round the mark in every leg, but Lewis cleaned up on the doubles when he was required to finish each leg. Curley played a real cliffhanger with Ralph Brown of Victoria. He had to come from behind again to win this semi final 5-4.

Average per dart in the final was:
Kim Lewis 24.183
Darryl Curley 26.332
