Ladies Peter Mac Darts Cup shoots to Victoria

The Victorian Ladies White Team won the Peter McMenamin Cup in Darwin today. This is the first time that the Victorian Ladies have won this title. They accounted for NSW Dark Blue Team in the final. The Victorian Team represented by Tracey James, Janine Cassar, Joanne Hadley and Sheryll Beasy had a pretty tough way to the final having to win a tie-breaker against Queensland. Both Victoria and Queensland had tied at the end of the round robin. This saw Tracey James win against Nancy Homer for the right to participate in the final. NSW had a similar journey to the final, having also to win a tie-breaker. Carol Forward accounted for WA’s Natalie Carter to move into the final. Not one team was able to win all of their games in the preliminary rounds prior to the finals, which made the competition interesting and strongly contested. Victoria dominated the final against NSW who were represented by Carol Forwood, Corrine Parkhouse, Donna Wood and Pam Zorbas (Zorbas replaced Kerry Jacobs a due to illness in the final round earlier in the day) winning 9-4.

The winner came from the Green Division where the Queensland Maroon team dominated the Men’s competition. They were the only team to go through all the qualifying rounds undefeated and easily won the final 9-2. The Team made up by players Simon Whitlock, Dave Nogar Jnr, Dave Muller and Dave Marshall played brilliant darts to make the final with most of the other Green Division being easily out classed. In the Gold Division all teams lost at least one round, so the competition was much tighter. Coming through to make the final was NSW Light Blue who lost one round to WA. Victoria was not able to beat NSW in the last round to have a chance at the final. The final saw the Queensland open up winning the first seven legs before NSW’s Johan Plotz was able to stop the demolition by throwing a 15-darter. NSW represented by Brian Roach, Paul Ross, Johan Plotz and Dennis Cotton, only won one more leg. This saw Queensland retain the title it won for the second time last year in Gosford. The scoring power of the Queensland team was magnificent with the best leg being thrown by Simon Whitlock in 13 darts, which include a maximum score of 180. Dave Muller had the honour of hitting the winning double.

The Peter Mac Cup was the first competition completed on the eight-day program at the 24th Australian Darts Championships where 128 of Australians top ladies and men are competing. The Peter Mac Cup named after the now deceased Darts Federation of Australia and World Darts Federation President Peter McMenamin, is a round robin competition with all States and Territories having a team in each of the Green and Gold Divisions. The matches are played on a World Cup formats were players play one leg of 501. First team of four players winning nine legs takes the match and the winner of each Division contest the final.

The Australian Ladies and Men’s Pairs start tomorrow morning followed by one round of the Australian Teams Championships being played over the next three days starting tomorrow at 10am each day.
