PERFECT FINISH BY STEVE DUKE |
Victorian
player Steve Duke (pictured right) ![]() produced the highlight of the day on day one of the Peter McMenamin Cup at the 24th Puma Australian Darts Championships at the Chan Building in Darwin. He scored the highest score possible to finish a game of darts, 170 in the second round of competition against Colin Edwards of South Australia. With a finish like that he has set a standard for the week ahead, which looks like being one of extremely tight hard competition. The first four rounds of the Ladies Peter Mac Cup sees New South Wales Ladies in a powerful position to make the finals with three rounds remaining in the Green Division. The NSW Ladies have not dropped a round while SA, WA and TAS having lost in only one round remaining in the hunt. WA and SA have already lost to NSW, while Tasmania holds the key to the finals if they are able to defeat NSW and win their remaining rounds. The competition is very tight in this division with four teams in with a chance to make the final. Victoria is in control of the Gold Division having won all their rounds so far. South Australia lost in the second round to Victoria to still be in the hunt. Queensland lost to WA earlier today to be the other Team in with a chance to make the finals, but still need to play Victoria and South Australia. Queensland Men have won all their matches in the Green Division with a powerful performance winning all four rounds against WA, SA, VIC and TAS. Tasmania and Western Australia look like being the only other teams in that division with a chance to make the final, but they will need to win all of the remaining rounds and rely on Queensland to lose a round against NT, NSW or ACT. The same scenario applies in the Gold Division, with New South Wales the Team to catch. They won all off their rounds today with victories over ACT, QLD, SA and TAS. The first round tomorrow will be WA’s chance to get back into the finals race. Having lost just one round, they play NSW first up tomorrow morning. Victoria is also still in with a chance having lost to WA first round this morning, but is to play NSW in the last round and must win that round to have a chance. The Gold Division is to close to call at this stage. Player’s that look like being in top form at this early stage are former Australian Champion Dot McLeod and teammate Natalie Carter from WA, Helen Johnston and Lee-anne Faulkner from TAS, Anita Tapau from QLD, and Joyce Mackie from SA. For the Men, players performing well are Steve Duke and Ralph Brown from VIC, Anthony Fleet from the ACT, Brian Roach from NSW, Simon Whitlock and Dave Muller from QLD, Graham Hunt from WA and Paul Ridler from SA. |
